Middleton High School Construction Progress Continues

The Middleton School District continues moving forward for the planned 2011 school opening. The new school occupies a 60-acre site located north of Hwy 44 on Emmett Road in Middleton Idaho.

Working closely with the Middleton School District, Design West Architects and Beniton Construction, The Land Group provided project entitlement and permitting, site civil engineering, landscape architecture and irrigation system design, as well as off-site sewer and water engineering and adjacent roadway engineering.

East Junior High Welcomes Students to New Facility

The Boise School District welcomed students to a brand new East Junior High for the 2009/2010 school year.

The brand-new facility replaces the aging older East Junior High that educated generations near Broadway and Warm Springs Avenue. The new school is the seventh new school to be opened during the past two years for the Boise School District.

The new school occupies a 20-acre site located further east on Warm Springs Avenue in the Barber Valley, near the Harris Ranch Development.

Working closely with the School District, LCA Architects and Beniton Construction, The Land Group provided site civil engineering, landscape architecture and irrigation system design, and assisted LCA Architects with project entitlement at project inception and with construction administration as the school became reality.

Our work included site planning and layout, grading and storm drainage, site utilities, planting design, irrigation systems and piping of an irrigation canal. East Junior High includes a synthetic turf athletic field - the first designed by TLG.

TLG Honored with ASLA Merit Award

This year at the Idaho-Montana ASLA Rendezvous, The Land Group received an ASLA Planning and Analysis Award of Merit for the Barber Station and Marianne Williams Park Master Plan.

The scope of the work included a 53 acre mixed use development and a 70 acre regional park. The Land Group was the prime consultant leading the project through annexation and rezone, design development, design review, construction documents and ongoing construction administration. This involved the coordination of multiple consultants and agencies including civil and transportation engineers, architects, ecologists, the City of Boise, Ada County Highway District, Department of Lands, Bureau of Land Management, Idaho Fish and Game and the Department of Environmental Quality.

The site was formerly a lumber mill, but has been vacant for decades. The Boise River runs along the southern edge and historically this site would have been subject to spring flooding. When levees were created to protect the mill, the area no longer flooded and the natural wetlands disappeared. By removing the existing dike, re-grading Walling Creek for flood conveyance, and lowering ground elevation along the river, the project allows some natural flooding and increases the flood capacity of the river. The plan is calculated to result in a reduction of up to .5 feet in the 100 year base flood elevation of the Boise River adjacent to the Wood Duck Island development. It increases the quality of wildlife habitat with over 20 acres of wetland and riparian areas and improved fish spawning habitat in Walling Creek.

The Land Group largely used the site hydrology to define the zoning plan and dictate future development. The land outside of the floodway was identified as Barber Station, a commercial hub with mixed use development, high density residential and the core of the new park. The land in the floodway provided an opportunity for parkland, restoring wetlands and riparian ecosystems and recreational opportunities. Roads, utilities, storm water design and other infrastructure were integrated with the adjacent Harris Ranch Community expansion plan and the new Park Center Bridge to the north. Planning and design stressed connectivity to surrounding communities, the Boise River greenbelt, and downtown Boise through public transit, bike paths and pedestrian walkways.

The area for Marianne Williams Park was donated by Larry and Marianne Williams. The park core offers opportunities for walking, picnicking and cycling. It includes a plaza, picnic shelter, gazebo and restroom facility. Along the Boise River and Walling Creek, the park protects and enhances wildlife habitat while integrating trails for interpretive signage, wildlife viewing and other passive activities. All buildings, landscaping, site design, lighting, signage and road design are to comply with design guidelines developed by the landscape architect and architect to ensure development evolves as proposed through the Boise City Planning and Zoning process.

- "Natural elements brought into the site seamlessly; Walling Creek brought into the development creates a great asset for the mixed use and residential areas."

- "Trails, greenbelts along the river and trails throughout the development are a huge benefit – attraction to future residents and surrounding community."

- "Ecology of the design provides an increased floodway only helping the development by making it more attractive to the community and residents, but also responds to the needs of nature and the natural processes of the adjacent Boise River."

Ridgeview Campground - Lake Cascade

On July 4th weekend of 2009, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation added a new campground at Lake Cascade. The campground, known as Ridgeview, was designed by The Land Group's civil and landscape staff. The campground is located just west of the City of Cascade and provides thirty sites for RV's and campers. Full electrical and water hook ups were designed for each camp site, and several have sewer hook ups as well. The design also included a new shower and restroom building.

This site has always been a popular place to camp, but overuse was causing erosion and damage to other natural resources. The Land Group's approach was to provide a new facility while minimizing the impact of construction on existing vegetation, to fit the design of the campground to the natural contours of the land, and to make the best use of the great views of Lake Cascade and the mountains to the west. The campground is on the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation reservation system, so book a site and pack your fising pole!

Van Buren Elementary School

Caldwell's new Van Buren Elementary school is eager to kick off the school year in their new building which they hope will achieve LEED Silver status from the USGBC.

The Land Group completed the site civil engineering, landscape and irrigation system designs, and assisted LKV Architects with project entitlements. Included in the work were site grading, storm drainage systems, underground utilities and gravity irrigation piping.

Construction of the project involved a team including McKinstry, Scott Hedrick Construction and LKV Architects. Throughout, the design approach focused on sustainability; the site is designed to maximize open space and enhance restoration of the drainage ditch running through the site. The site landscape locates shade trees on the south and west faces of the building to help reduce energy consumption. The irrigation system design employs the latest technology in moisture sensing to optimize the landscape water usage.

The Building at 611 E. Sherman was abuzz in early September as The Land Group, Inc. opened the doors of the firm's third Idaho office.

The Back Nine

In the Golf Idaho insert from the September 2008 edition of the Pacific Northwest Golfer magazine, Bob Lantz, the PGA Head Professional of the Rupert Country Club, was interviewed. When asked about some of the biggest changes he has seen at his course he answered:

"The biggest change at Rupert CC is the addition of the new back nine. This has increased the membership by 200 and the activity at the course has increased dramatically because of this wonderful improvement to the club and our community. The nine was added in 1994 and it is now showing signs of maturity with the growth of the trees. This, along with other factors, has helped increase the number of families participating in the game of golf and in our junior program. We also see more "couples" golf than ever before."
